Efficiency, Rigor, Innovation

Wow, it's been a busy month, and my apologies for the lack of posts!

I thought I'd resume with some themes I have been using in public speaking events recently. In particular, I argue that in today's economic climate IT departments must focus around three key imperatives:

  • Efficiency. The most obvious of the three, it's clear that belt-tightening is required across every aspect of IT. The conundrum, of course, lies in how.

At the topmost level, improving the relationship -- and the communications effectiveness -- between business and IT will yield great results. Why? Because the more IT is delivering what the business needs, the less time, money and resources will be wasted.

Technically, advances like cloud computing remove the need for (some) onsite computing resources, with consequent reductions in facilities and power, and enables valuable staff to be refocused on the key business-critical issues.

  • Rigor. Doing everything armed with as much quantitative evidence as possible that they are the right things to do is vital. Rigorous models that describe your application portfolio, its health, and its capabilities, allow you to know precisely where and where not to invest. Similarly scorecards allow you to know if your initiatives are succeeding, and where they may need additional attention.

  • Innovation. It's easy in such times to cut back entirely on innovation, but history shows that that is precisely the wrong approach. Technology continually provides new game-changers that can substantially, maybe even radically, improve or catapult your organization forward. New ways of analyzing data, immersive user interfaces, cloud and mobile computing -- all of these and many more have the potential to transform your business even in dark times.

These are my watchwords these days -- I think they're pretty good for the world we live in.
