RSS and HTML

Scoble (via Jeff) says "the real war is between HTML and RSS," and not between IE and its competitors.

Man, I couldn't agree more, although I don't really think it's a war; more like an impending convergence. I haven't got to the point yet where I spend more time in my aggregator than in my browser...but that day is coming. Ultimately I think they will become one.

Improv

Our old pal Pito (via Peter) reminisces about Lotus Improv, that amazingly innovative n-dimensional spreadsheet from the early 90's, which he invented.

Why did Improv fail? Pito says,

In the end it didn't go anywhere, probably because in setting out to improve on spreadsheets, Improv lost the essence of a spreadsheet and in doing so lost the market.

Well, Pito, you shouldn't beat yourself up on this. It was not a failure of vision that killed Improv -- Lotus could not figure out (and in fairness this was hard) how to market two very different types of spreadsheet programs, the very remarkable Improv and the mature, traditional 1-2-3. In the end we decided to put the "next generation spreadsheet on the next generation platform" (namely, NeXT) but that didn't work out well either.

It was a great product.
