Jimmy Carter writes in USA Today:
We face the strong possibility of another Korean war, with potentially devastating consequences, so the endangered multilateral talks in Beijing are of paramount importance. It is vital that some accommodation be reached between Pyongyang and Washington.
I really don't understand why a President of the United States would say something like this. Yes, we could reach some "accommodation" which maintains the status quo -- but the status quo is totally unacceptable for a wide range of reasons.
How Can We Trust North Korea?
Even while the Agreed Framework of 1994 (which Carter negotiated) was in place, North Korea demonstrably and illegally continued its research into nuclear weapons technology, possibly to the extent of exporting it to Pakistan, Libya, and other unstable countries. There is no "status quo."
Is Carter Channeling Neville Chamberlain?
Carter is the most spiritual President the United States has ever had; yet how can he ignore the immense human suffering taking place as a result of the North Korean government's policies? Economically, it's a disaster, so people are starving; politically, it's one of the most repressive dictatorships in history, so citizens are arrested and thrown in prisons making the Soviet gulags look like resorts; militarily it's a huge threat -- more on that later.
Truly, who really believes we should have appeased Hitler and avoided World War II at all costs?
North Korea Threatens The US
As I've written before, North Korea is developing weapons which threaten not only the region but also the continental United States. It is inconceivable that we live under the threat of a North Korean nuclear missile attack. I personally have no qualms about using whatever force necessary to prevent this unacceptable scenario from becoming reality.
What is President Carter thinking?
UPDATE: The Marmot has more to say on this.
