Wakeup Call October 14

From Long Island,  I am Jim Krivo

Paul Vitello in his Newsday column discusses the problem we have  excluding third parties in theUnited States.  Owen Johnson is a Republican, and has been a State Senator in Southwest Suffolk County for 34years.  Barring an intervention by the courts, he will be running unopposed in the upcoming election. Kimberly Wilder,a local activist , decided to challenge Mr. Owens on the Green line this year..  Paul Vitello points out that the unfairness if the process.  For Wilder, the signatures can only be collected by volunteers living in the district , whereas  Dems or Republicans can have volunteers from anywhere..  The  six week window for her to collect the signatures starts a month after the window for Democrats and Republicans..  The number she is required to collect,is 5% of all the votes cast in the last election , whereas her opponent only needed 5% of Republican votes cast.  Despite all this, she collected 2,155 signatures, although 3000 were required. Kimberly is arguing her case in court.  She states Ó it is unbelievable how many obstacles the system puts up for independent candidatesÓ It is not rightÓ There should not be one set of rules for the elected and another set for the rest of us.
